It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas....

We haven't done as much decorating as last year, but we really like our new fence! We actually had the lighted garlands since September, before our fence was even installed. We like how the look turned out.

So it's been busy around here since Thanksgiving. We had a fun time in Pennsylvania with Grammum and Pappy and their new puppy Zeke. The kids did pretty good in the car. We're looking forward to Christmas in Oregon and meeting the new cousins...

Evalyn's Cute Sayings

(I realized I never put these cute Evalyn-isms into a post, so I'll call this Dec 5th)

At bedtime we routinely step outside and say goodnight to the moon and stars, or clouds if they're blocking the former. We'd been talking about how the moon looks different and changes. One night as we look out at the moon and she saw it's gibbous state exclaimed: "The moon is going to have a full belly!"

We've been going over the nativity scene and Baby Jesus in the manger, usually surrounded by yellow hay. I was lounging on the couch and invited Evalyn to climb up and sleep with me. She said, "It's my own manger!" while settling in on a yellow blanket in the crook between Mommy's bent legs.

Happy Halloween!

So I'm a little late with the post, but it's better late than never! A few days before Halloween we went to the church party that always includes a Trunk-or-Treat. Only this year it was raining heavily, so they improvised and had the adults line the hallway and overflow instead of the trunks of their cars to hand candy out to the throngs of children who squeezed through with parents.

Pumpkin carving with the kids was a blast! Henry just chilled, but Evalyn really got into it. She was still sqeamish about handling the slimy innards of the pumpkin, but she loved the faces we carved and seeing them all lit up. : ) "Daddy's pumkin's smiling at me!" she said upon seeing it lit for the first time.

And finally Trick-or-Treating on our street. All 7 of the houses that had their lights on. But that's about right for two kids under 3! Henry would've been fine after one house, but Evalyn was raring to go. She was most excited about the apple from our neighbor across the street who saved one just for her. Since we are the only people on the street with young kids, it's a novelty to have "homegrown" trick-or-treaters!

And of course, here's some photos. : )

123rd Page

(I saw this on Corinne's blog.)

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

Although "my dear Father in his dear Son, roused me every now and then by dangers and deliverances," Marrant wrote, it was not until after his discharge ashore that he again found the Lord. Boston King experienced similar spiritual isolation. Born into South Carolinian slavery, King fled to the British navy about the time Marrant succumbed to the press. He served a short naval stint, worked on a pilot boat out of New York, and then fished several seasons on the Labrador coast after joining the loyalist exodus to Nova Soctia.

This is from Black Jacks: African American Seamen in the Age of Sail, one of Matt's research books for the screenplay he started writing several years ago. The first book I grabbed (52 Weeks of Family Night) only had 103 pages. The next one (Famiy Home Evening Guide) had a picture on page 123. So I went to Matt's bookcase and grabbed the first one that caught my eye.

We love the fall!!

On Friday we had a great family day. We drove up to the Catoctins near a small town called Thurmont, MD. We hiked to the falls at Cunningham Falls State Park, journeying through forested glens accented by the sharp, yet muted colors of fall admist the great Eastern hardwoods. We rewarded ourselves with a picnic spread at the end, curtesy of a fine made-to-order at Sheetz :-) Then the kids napped in the car while Matt fished the step pools on Big Hunting Creek and Holly read a book. Then we drove off to the famed Crumland Farms and enjoyed a late-afternoon barnyard frolic -- think hayrides, pumpkin patch, corn maze, goats and Johnny Cash!

Connecticut Trip

Here's a link to photos of the trip, Sept 14-17. Holly spent a day at the fair with Angelina and her family, and Matt fished some new waters, and we went to Zuri and Justin's wedding, which was what spearheaded the whole trip. We bought an EZ Pazz in preparation: so glad we did! It makes tolls a breeze. Just slow down and keep driving. : ) We spent a lot of time on the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, which was fun for Holly to remember the NJ Morristown Mission days...

We also discovered a store called The Christmas Tree Shops. Fabulous prices on household decor and gifts, etc. But very dangerous! ; ) We did get some very cute fall and Christmas decor though. The kids did okay in the hotel room, but no one slept very well. It was a nice get-away, but we were glad to be back in our own beds by the end!

New Fence!

Rather than upload photos again that are already in my picasaweb album, here's a link for the pictures.

It was pretty funny seeing Jadie the cat's reaction more than the kids. She was very baffled by this great white barrier that she couldn't jump over and was uncomfortable to scoot beneath. What an improvement over the rusty chain link! The best part: not opening and closing the front gate everytime we go in the yard to play or back the car out or in.

Henry and the Chocolate Factory

This post submitted by Matt/Daddy

It was a typical, lazy weekend afternoon. Evalyn had the idea to have a mid-afternoon snack -- ice cream, in this case. Daddy, just back from a long 5 ½ day business trip, was ready to cave in to any sweet indulgences he and his daughter could dream of. Just as Evalyn suggested ice cream, Daddy was quick to add chocolate syrup to the equation.

After we ate the cool concoctions, Henry decided he wanted in on the action. Daddy caved in to his demands as is customary. But upon tasting the cool sensation, he winced and promptly decided that this business of eating ice cold foods wasn’t for him.

So Henry and Evalyn resume their playing on the messy living room floor. (Editor’s note: This room was spotless when Daddy came home from Denver on Friday night). Daddy returned to the Sunday Paper and got caught up in the latest quarterback controversy in Washington. When Daddy noticed Evalyn again, she had grabbed the bottle of chocolate syrup and was using her teeth to pry open the flip top lid. Once she had it open, Daddy asked her not to do that and she complied. She snapped the lid closed and said, “I’ll give it to Henry to play with.”

To daddy, that was a good idea because he knew all to well what kinds of messes his daughter likes to make with squeeze bottles such as this one. No harm, no foul as they say. Besides what damage could a 9-month old do? He is a smart boy. And really, how much do motor skills change in just five days?

Daddy was right. The flip top was too much for Henry to figure out. But he failed to consider that all squeeze type bottles have a back-door into the world of mess-making. Daddy simply underestimated his son’s ability to twist off the cap.

And while daddy was reading about football and politics, Henry was doing his best to re-enact the Alaskan oil spill. Yes, daddy looked up and saw his very own Exxon Valdez in the comfort of the living room. The thick black gold was oozing and flowing – our carpet was no match for Captain Henry. Nearly 3/4th of the bottle was emptied onto the carpet – and there in the middle was the man at the helm – Henry sitting amidst the devastation. SPLAT! SPLAT! SPLAT! Went his hands. SPLATTER! SPLATTER! SPALTTER went the chocolaty debris. It was like a Jackson Pollack painting on the walls and book case.

Daddy blinked and then pinched himself. The disaster was still there….this was no dream. Daddy would do anything for this to have been a dream. He feared the wrath of his wife. She managed to keep the kids out of trouble for five whole days alone. But, not daddy! He couldn’t even keep the kid’s under control for 30 minutes while his wife napped.

Why did this have to happen on his watch? Surely, this wasn’t happening. But he had to do something. So daddy leapt out his chair swooped his son into his arms then realized: Bad Idea. Daddy was now marred with chocolate syrup. “Yes,” he thought to himself. “Put the kid down, and pull his shirt off to avoid future contamination, and then go to the sink to wash up.”

Daddy quickly put Henry in his high chair – where he was high and dry from the devastation below. Daddy then went to the sink and filled a mixing bowl with Dawn and hot water. When Daddy returned to the scene a few moments later….Little Miss Evalyn, now bare naked and sitting smack in the middle of the spill, did her own splattering. What a mess. With a roll of paper towels in hand, Daddy started to the clean up. But realized he was scrubbing the mess deeper into the carpet fibers.

Evalyn, upon seeing the bowl of water, decided to flip it over and dump it contents onto the spill. Not a bad, strategy, Daddy thought to himself. But Evalyn had just begun to have fun. As daddy scrubbed, the carpet started to foam a nice, sudsy, coffee color. LOTS of light brown foam everywhere. Evalyn, then rolled into the carpet. She stood up and hoped around. It was out of control. Henry laughing from his perch above while Evalyn continued her gymnastics on the floor. With each of her steps, so went the brown imprint elsewhere in the room.

After a fashion, it became evident to daddy: the stain on the carpet was now a permanent fixture and was not going to disappear. Luckily, Daddy’s kids clean up much better and they are just as sweet.

Fever Check

Henry and Evalyn are both sick with some viral sore throat we think
they caught in PA; their cousins caught the same thing. : ( It's an
hour past their bedtime and right now they're bouncing off the walls
because they both took late naps and got Tylenol before their bath.
Meanwhile, Matt and I are exhausted from staying up late watching the
Steeler's beat Miami, Evalyn's 3AM wake-up and working all day in the
yard trying to tame the jungle.

This morning at 5 AM Matt was keeping Evalyn company in the living
room. They watched Jadie attack a roll of paper towels which sent
Evalyn into laughing hysterics. After playing awhile longer, Daddy
asked, "Evalyn, can I feel your forehead?" She replied, "Daddy I
don't have a fever." She doesn't like thermometers.

Full Cheese

Evalyn loves cheese. She will eat it grated, sliced and will bite it right off the block when she can. Yesterday at lunch I asked if she wanted cheese with her pasta. She replied, "I want some full cheese, Mommy." I guessed that she meant not grated, but sliced ie a "full" slice. And I must've been right because she gleefully ate it up.

Watering Plants

Today was very hot and muggy. It's been a very hot and muggy summer and we are all ready for cooler fall weather. We had almost no rain the entire month of August and the plants and trees are showing it.

We came back from playgroup today and pulled into the carport, as usual. Only two of the four hanging baskets I started with are still up. And I gave up on these two a few weeks ago. Evalyn, noticing that they seemed a little parched and brown, said, "Mommy needs to water the plants."

The Crismis

While swinging in my birthday present hammock, (we finally got it put up this past weekend thanks to Pappy Roy) I watched Evalyn playing in some small trees with two sticks. She remembered I was there and with great excitement called to me, "Do you want to come into my crismis?" I got up and asked her to repeat it, trying to grasp the context.

I gathered that one stick was a key and she was "unlocking" the tree. The other was her wand. She would go in and stand "inside" the tree. It all made perfect sense to her, but I was still a bit baffled. Was she thinking about Christmas trees? Or was there another word I wasn't getting? Either way, she was clearly delighted with her "crismis" and happy that I went "in".

Postscript
8/29/06 I think I figured it out: One of her new books is about a bunny who follows his nose and explores new smells everywhere. In one scene, he is surounding by pine trees and says that it smells like Christmas. So, I'm guessing that being surrounded by trees now means "crismis". : )

Eating Birds, Airplanes, and Trains

This afternoon while Henry was still napping, Evalyn and I went outside in the almost pleasantly warm weather to eat popsicles. Or in her case, happily hold the popsicle and watch it melt. I think she likes the idea of eating a popsicle and what it entails more than the popsicle itself: asking and receiving, choosing a color, going outside sometimes, eating it with Mommy or Daddy, etc.

So after finishing mine, I went back in and got a cup and fork to facilitate the eating process. After I transferred her stain-your-clothes-cherry-red-sicle to the cup and mushed it into perfect slushy bite-sized chunks, she decided she was all done. (argh!!)

But I know my little girl and had a hunch that she really did want it but needed help. So I took a bite of the cold slush ("Mmmm! This is so good!") and then fed her a bite ("My turn Mommy!"), just like spooning food to Henry. My turn, her turn. As I lifted the fork and offered her a bite she says to me, "Do you want to eat a birdie, Mommy?" I paused for a split-second, smiled and remembered the bird flying to the nest game. "Of course I do." Then we ate some airplanes and trains, too.

Go back to your 'puter

I've started this toy rotation thing where about half of the kids
toys are upstairs in the big free for all/storage room and the other
half down here. Last night and this morning I brought down a new
batch of kitchen toys and Evalyn's play kitchen. She was so excited
to play with these "new" toys. At one point she mentioned that she
needed to make a snack in the back room, which I thought meant she
needed my help to get a snack. I followed her back asking her what
she needed. She turns to me and says, "No Mommy, go back to your
'puter!"

Wacky Wild World

The weather has been pleasant this week, so we ventured into our very own big backyard this morning after Henry's nap. It is a little "jungley" still in some places, despite the bulldozing Grampa Moore did in May. Evalyn played on her slide a bit then beelined to the 8x8 garden box that never became a garden. It hasn't been weed-wacked recently so the grass and weedy ailanthus trees were almost as tall or taller than her.

I smiled at how cute she was "exploring" and hoped there wasn't any snakes or toxic plants in there. Just to be safe, I went over to make a visual inspection and she turned and said to me with great excitement, "It's Wacky Wild World, Mommy!!!"

wacky wild world

(If your 2-year-old watches Blues Clues on a regular basis, you will fully appreciate this. Otherwise, I will summarize it by saying Joe and Blue skidoo into Wacky Wild World where everything is crazy and tall and different. "Skidoo Adventure" is the name of the episode. If you don't know what skidoo means, well, that's just too much explaining. )

Roll the Baby Dry

We play a post-bathtime game that involves rocking or rolling the towel-wrapped child back and forth on our bed while chanting a song "Roll the Baby Dry...Roll the Baby Dry" before diaper and PJs. The kids love it, especially when Mommy and Daddy roll them together....peals of laughter!

Late yesterday afternoon, Evalyn discovered that the Thermarest camping mattress (recently unloaded from the car) rolled back and forth. So, she began singing the "Roll the Baby Dry..." song while rolling the "baby" back and forth. She then asked the baby/air mattress "Do you wanna put your pajamas on? Okay!" and ran to get clothes from her room to dress the baby.

PS Evalyn's favorite letters, below that she contributed while I tried to write this. (only slightly edited)

Toddler Talk: Tasting Toes

Evalyn and I were reading a library book called Busy Toes. It's about the many different things toes can do. Tip toes, shadow toes, wiggly toes, etc. One picure was about tasting toes. I asked Evalyn if she could taste her toes, which she did. Mommy:"What do they taste like?" Evalyn: "Birthday cake!"

(Yes, Heather I stole your idea. I like the Toddler Talk series idea. But at least I'm giving you credit!)

Henry crawling through a "desert" of sand

camping at the beach can be sandy, but it's great to have non-muddy dirt for the kids to play in!

Henry and Evalyn

I know you're not *supposed* to compare your kids to eachother, but I can't help it.
After putting these photos side by side I've determined that Henry and Evalyn are indeed brother and sister. They are a beautiful blend of both of us. Shocking, isn't it?

Family Portrait

Here's take five of our family portrait for Memorial Day.

Compare to 5 months ago....

And to one year ago in Oregon....

Maybe we should consider getting a professional portrait done at some point so we look a little more put together!
